Chemical Peels
How it works Chemical peels, as their name implies, use a chemical solution that burns away the outer layer of skin. Although it sounds painful, a slight burning sensation is felt only when the solution is initially applied to the skin. The burning fades quickly because the solution also tends to act as an anesthetic. Dr. Alexander will apply the solution only to problem areas, unless a full facial peel is desired. The whole procedure may take an hour or more depending on the area treated. A mask will be applied that must be left on for one to two days. Recovery Your face will tingle and itch after the procedure. Cool compresses and medications can help. A crusty scab will form on your new skin to help protect it. Dr. Alexander will give you instructions on when you can wash your face to remove this crust. Once the crust is gone, your skin will be red, as if you have a bad sunburn. The color will lighten gradually to more of a pink color. You must avoid exposure to the sun for at least three weeks. This prevents your skin tone from becoming uneven. After three weeks, sun exposure is ok as long as you wear sunblock. Expect to be back to normal daily activities within one to two days. More strenous activities can be resumed in two to three weeks. Consultations Anyone considering facial plastic surgery should take the time to learn as much as possible about the procedures. Ask about a free cosmetic consultation with Dr. Alexander to discuss the procedures that might help you attain the appearance you want. |
