Dermabrasion
Like chemical peels and laser resurfacing, it can also be done in conjunction with other procedures such as facelifts and eyelid surgery. How it works Dermabrasion works by polishing the top layer of skin so that the edges of scars or other irregularities are blended with the surrounding skin. Dr. Alexander uses a tool that has a small metal wheel that spins rapidly. He moves the spinning wheel gently over the surface of the skin to smooth scars as well as the overall surface of the skin. A local anesthesia is injected into the area before the treatment. Once complete, the skin will be covered with an ointment and bandage. The procedure may take an hour or more if the entire face is being done. For smaller areas it may only take minutes. Recovery When the procedure is over, the skin looks red and is tender. As the anesthesis wears off, you will experience some burning and tingling. Pain medication will provide relief. The next day, the bandage can be removed and a crust will form as the new skin begins to form underneath. The crust will come off soon. Within a week or so after surgery, swelling will be gone. Your skin will have a pinkish look and you should be able to wear makeup after the second week. Avoid sun exposure and always wear sunblock. Consultations Anyone considering facial plastic surgery should take the time to learn as much as possible about the procedures. Ask about a free cosmetic consultation with Dr. Alexander to discuss the procedures that might help you attain the appearance you want. |
