Sore Throats Tonsillitis Pharyngitis Epiglottitis About the Tonsils and Adenoids |
EpiglottitisEpiglottitis is a dangerous throat infection that causes swelling that can close the airway. It is caused by bacteria and typically is seen in children ages two through seven. Symptoms of epiglottitis are an abrupt onset of high fever, sore throat and difficulty swallowing, moderate to severe difficulty breathing, stridor, and lethargy. A child with epiglottitis will often sit leaning forward with their mouth open and chin extended in an effort to open their airway. Because of the sore throat and difficulty swallowing, they often drool. Their voice may sound muffled, and they may also have symptoms of stridor (croup). This infection is an emergency condition that requires prompt medical attention. A strep test may miss this infection. |
