Hearing Evaluations

Alexander Ear, Nose, and Throat Center provides comprehensive hearing testing and evaluation enabling you to make the best decision regarding your hearing needs.

The hearing test

A hearing test is given using an instrument called an audiometer. To perform the test, our audiologist will ask you to sit in a sound-proof booth and wear a set of earphones. When the test begins, you'll hear a series of tones or beeps in one of your ears. Each time you hear a tone you will press a button. The tones will become quieter and quieter until you can no longer hear them. Then the test will shift to the other ear and repeat the process.

The results of the test are called an audiogram. The audiogram shows how well you hear at different frequencies — especially the important speech frequencies.

Hearing loss can sometimes be treated with drugs, but often a hearing aid is necessary depending on the extent of hearing loss.
