Outer Ear Infections (Swimmer's Ear)

Just like the middle and inner ear, the outer ear can become infected too. Infections of the outer ear are called most often called swimmer's ear (otitis externa).

Swimmer's ear is an infection of the outer ear canal. There are many things that can cause this type of infection. The most common cause is bacteria that enters the ear when you swim.

When water gets in your ear, it usually runs back and everything is fine. Sometimes, however, it doesn't come back out and the bacteria and/or fungi that may have entered your with it don't come out either.
